Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. (D) on Monday announced that his office had obtained former President Donald Trump’s long-sought tax records.
Millions of documents were seized from Mazars USA (Trump’s accounting firm) directly after the Supreme Court refused to hear the latest case from Trump’s lawyers, who sought to keep the files private.
Vance subpoenaed Mazars USA in 2019 as part of an investigation into the “hush money” payments Trump made to two women who claim to have had affairs with him. Trump immediately sued to block the subpoena, claiming his role as POTUS gave him immunity from Vance’s investigation.
The Supreme Court defeated Trump’s argument in July, and the investigation was sent back to the lower courts.
Vance is also investigating Trump and the Trump Organization for alleged insurance fraud, tax fraud, and other schemes – including providing false information to banks – and has subpoenaed Deutsche Bank and Ladder Capital, which have loaned Trump more than $300 million and $100 million, respectively.
Just like the Russia investigation, we can expect the investigation into Trump’s tax returns to drag on for years and produce little-to-no culpability despite Democrats’ best efforts to lock him up.
