In a letter released today, the Consumer Brands Association is calling for answers on how its companies will be expected to implement the COVID-19 Action Plan.
In a two-page letter, Association CEO Geoff Freeman wrote Biden requesting “that federal agencies move quickly, anticipate challenges, promptly answer questions and partner with the private sector if we are to realize successful implementation of the administration’s COVID-19 Action Plan and achieve our shared goal of increased vaccination rates.”
The CBA also represents companies such as Procter & Gamble and General Mills, as well as retailers Amazon, Albertsons and Target, CNBC reported.
Biden’s plan, which is unveiled in a speech last week, mandates that all employers with more than 100 workers require them to be vaccinated or test for the virus weekly, which would affect about 80 million Americans. Roughly 17 million workers at health facilities that receive federal Medicare or Medicaid also will have to be fully vaccinated. Biden officials have said companies could face penalties of up to $14,000 per violation.
The CBA said that government guidance earlier in the pandemic routinely lagged weeks or months behind initial announcements and often conflicted with state and local requirements. The association represents more than 2 million workers nationwide.
Included in the letter were a series of questions prompted by a “flood of feedback” from member companies, the CBA stated. Among the questions:
- What is considered documentation for proof of vaccination and how will booster shots factor into compliance?
- Must an employee be fully vaccinated in order to work?
- Will the requirements only apply to vaccines that are fully approved by the FDA?
- Does the government plan to centralize vaccination tracking?
- What are the consequences of falsifying one’s vaccination status or test results?
- What is considered suitable documentation for a negative test result?
- Should employees choose not to vaccinate, is the company or employee responsible for securing and paying for testing? Will paid time off be required for weekly testing requirements?
- When will the requirements be formally issued?
- How does this mandate impact locations with collective bargaining and existing collective bargaining agreements?
- Do the new federal requirements include exemptions for religious beliefs and disabilities?
“Strong, consistent collaboration between the private and public sector on implementation will accelerate progress on our shared goal,” the letter states.
