Democrats are now saying that the decision by GOP members to bus and transportation of immigrants to other Democrat-held states could lead to them losing support on topics of immigration as the action can be seen as cruel and careless. This is especially important as originally the reason for the move of the migrants was to bring attention to the struggles of border towns, not make the matter a loss for the Republicans.
Frank Sharry, executive director of America’s Voice, has said that while Abbott and DeSantis were hoping to put immigration as a key point in ballots all they have actually managed to do is reinforce the position held by Democrats about MAGA extremism.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey are the three Republicans associated with the recent migration transportation programs as they have been shipping asylum-seeking migrants to New York City; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; and Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.
Immigration is commonly used as a key issue against Democrats during election periods, but currently many believe that the GOP’s actions could cause problems in the final stretch leading to the midterms.
Democrats during this midterm election campaign season have also tried to move attention away from topics such as inflation and instead redirect people’s focus toward abortion rights which were harmed by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and the recent investigations into Trump dealing which led to a raid of his Mar-a-Lago estate.
The transportation of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard and at Vice President Harris’s home in Washington is now also seen as potential distractions that can be used to drive the topic of conversation away from more controversial matters.
