An antisemitism watchdog has criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., over her comments about the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a lobbying group that aims to support the U.S.-Israel alliance.
A Federal Election Commission filing has shown that the AIPAC’s United Democracy Project super PAC has spent $78,683 on direct mail campaigns that oppose Summer Lee, a Democratic House candidate who has been endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez. Lee is currently running against Republican Mike Doyle in Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District. The position had been previously held by a retiring Democrat who also shares the name, Mike Doyle.
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Monday saying that the AIPAC should not be assisting the Republican party in their attempt to gain control of Congress and destabilize the country’s democracy.
Liora Rez, the executive director at StopAntisemitism.org, has said that comments like the ones made by Ocasio-Cortez add to the problem of the vilification of American Jews.
Rez said that behind AOC’s tweet there is the intent to “vilify a Jewish organization” He has also added that such a comment adds to the vilification of all American Jews.
The fact that AOC’s comments directly call out only AIPAC and not any other left-leaning groups working to keep Summer Lee from winning the elections “shows her true colors” Rez noted.
The Justice Democrats PAC also called out AIPAC over their choice to be aligned with the Republican party and support them in the midterm elections. Justice Democrats spokesperson Usamah Andrabi has said that the AIPAC and GOP appear to have a common agenda.
