(PartiallyPolitics.com) Republicans are warning against those who are saying that the GOP is looking to move on and are claiming that former President Trump’s 2024 White House bid does not stand a chance.
Following the 2022 midterm election, many Republican strategists and officials have claimed that the GOP would look to move away from Trump. This is because Trump was widely criticized for backing candidates in competitive races that did not end up gathering the necessary support.
Outside of the backlash relating to the midterm elections, the former President also has a number of investigations and legal cases piling up against him. These include an investigation into Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, as well as one into the mishandling of classified documents. As a result, Trump appears to be losing his position as the GOP’s de facto leader.
Despite the attention that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has been garnering, many strategists warn against writing Donald Trump off in favor of DeSantis. Ford O’Connell, one Republican strategist, noted that it is important to remember that Trump is the former President and his understanding of what it takes to be in that position is better than most people’s. He added that the former President remains popular with a large part of the Republican base, which could allow him to win the Republican primary.
While it might not be easy for Trump to win the White House a second time, it is by no means impossible, and the recent GOP losses should not be used to write off Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
