(PartiallyPolitics.com) Activists have blasted former President Donald Trump for saying that the reason the GOP suffered losses in the 2022 midterm election was because of the candidates supporting the pro-life movement.
The former president in a Truth Social Post argued that the GOP’s performance in the midterm elections had nothing to do with him and that instead, it was the “abortion issue” that had been handled incorrectly by many Republicans. Specifically, Trump also said that it was especially bad for candidates who did not provide any exceptions for the cases of rape, incest, or the life of the mother is endangered. This he claimed lost candidates the support of many voters.
Pro-life advocates however told the Daily Caller that protecting human lives is the choice that Republican candidates should make. Savanna Deretich, a government affairs coordinator for Students for Life of America, specifically said that taking a stand against the slaughter of innocent children was “fundamentally a conservative value.” She added that no true conservative would not have a pro-life stance.
Many advocates and groups have also pointed out that Trump does not have any evidence to support his claims as there were many candidates with strong anti-abortion views who performed well in the midterm elections. These included Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, Atlanta Gov. Brian Kemp, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. They also noted how many of those in competitive races who avoided taking a stance actually lost those races.
Shawn Carney, campaign director of 40 Days for Life noted that the abortion issue was only a “political loser for weak Republicans who failed to defend life,” and not for strong candidates with a strong stance.
