(PartiallyPolitics.com) – The Democratic Party has increasingly gotten more divided as far-left “Squad” members and more moderate challengers have been taking different positions in regard to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The issue was put at the forefront on Tuesday as the primaries in New York, Utah and Colorado took place.
In New York’s 16th Congressional District, the race was between two-term Rep. Jamaal Bowman and George Latimer, a Westchester County executive. This particular primary is the most expensive congressional primary recorded in U.S. history.
However, the race is set to be even more historic, as Bowman might become the first Squad member to lose his position in Congress. Bowman had won his seat after ousting 16-term Rep. Eliot Engel during the Democratic primary. Bowman could also potentially end up being the first House member from either party to face defeat in a primary challenge during this election cycle.
Bowman has been very vocal about his support of Palestine as the war in Gaza continues to escalate. He has also accused Israel of committing genocide and has been targeted by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee which has used around $14 million in support of his primary challenger.
Bowman has the support of both New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. The three held a campaign rally to raise support for him in the Bronx.
Latimer when referring to the campaign has argued that there have been many unkind things that were said about him and that he has even seen himself being referred to as “genocide George.”
