(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Biden says he’s “passing the torch to a new generation” in a vague explanation about why he abruptly exited the race.

On Wednesday night, President Joe Biden gave his first extended speech on why he departed the Presidential race suddenly, stating, “I revere this office, but I love my country more.”

For weeks before his withdrawal from the 2024 Presidential race on Sunday, Biden, 81, rebuffed mounting pressure from Democrats calling for him to exit the race after his dismal debate performance. At one point, Biden claimed only the “Lord Almighty” would be able to convince him it was time to leave.

Yet, Wednesday, he changed his tune, suggesting he concluded that “the best way forward” would be to “pass the torch to a new generation,” adding this is “the best way to unite our nation.”

However, while Biden lauded his accomplishments, discussed his humble roots, and praised Americans before concluding that “The power is in your hands,” and that the “idea of America” lies in the hands of voters, he didn’t give a clear reason why he exited the race.

Instead, he hinted at what may have happened, saying that “In recent weeks,” it became “clear” to him that he needed to “unite” the Democratic Party.

Biden is the first incumbent President in over 50 years who isn’t seeking reelection. The last time this occurred was in 1968, when then-President Lyndon Johnson abruptly ended his reelection bid on March 31 after coming under intense fire for his handling of the Vietnam War.
