(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Over two dozen GOP senators have been pushing against President Biden’s potential proposal that would allow Palestinian refugees to enter the country. As they have argued, the plan is a possible national security risk.
The opposition to the program has come after the Biden administration acknowledged that discussions to assist Palestinians in Gaza were currently underway and that the United States was looking at how they could help refugees from the region.
A total of 34 Republican senators led by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), and including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) signed the letter which was sent to the Biden administration. The letter showcases one more way in which the GOP could potentially attack President Biden ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Biden throughout the war in the Middle East has expressed support for Israel despite the political pressure from his party for a cease-fire. Protests have also erupted across the United States, with demonstrators calling for a cease-fire and pushing for Israel to be held accountable for the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
The GOP has slammed the Biden administration over the criticisms of Israel from the Democrats and has maintained that Israel had the right to defend itself following the Oct. 7, 2023 attack. The attack resulted in over 250 people being taken hostage, some of whom had dual-American citizenship. The Republican senators have repeatedly called for the president to secure the release of the American hostages rather than look at options to accept Palestinian refugees.
