(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that he and his wife of 29 years, Chirlane McCray, would be separating. In their announcement on Wednesday, the couple revealed that they are not planning on getting a formal divorce and that they will continue to live together while seeing other people.
The announcement was made by the couple during an extensive dual interview with the New York Times. McCray revealed that she just wanted to be able to “have fun.” The former first couple of NYC revealed that they had first started thinking and talking about separation in early May, but that they had been having relationship problems before that.
McCray also revealed that she had been skeptical about de Blasio running for President in 2020 and that his bid was a “distraction.” Despite this, she had supported her husband, whose bid had been a long shot as he was already a fairly unpopular mayor. She noted that this is part of the difficulty that comes with having to be a package.
De Blasio pointed out that McCray had been referring to herself as a lesbian since their first meeting, pointing out that this had always caused him to have doubts about their relationship. As he said there was always a part of him that was wondering whether or not this was a “time bomb ticking,” especially as his wife had even written an article called “I Am a Lesbian.”
The former couple did not speak about a third party causing their split.
