(PartiallyPolitics.com) – On Wednesday evening, the House of Representatives passed a bill to deport illegal immigrants who assault police officers.

The bill, which passed 265 to 148, is one of many pieces of legislation House Republicans are putting up for vote during National Police Week.

The bill, which only 54 Democrats supported, has been named the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Acts.

Republican Representative Jeff Van Drew (New Jersey) led the bill.

Van Drew said in February, when he first introduced the bill, that there isn’t a reason an illegal immigrant who has attacked U.S. law enforcement should be allowed to remain in the country.

He noted that such migrants had displayed their lack of respect for the country’s rule of law and legal institutions and, therefore, wouldn’t contribute positively to American society.

The bill outlines that federal authorities would need to detain the illegal immigrants accused of assaulting police before deporting them.

The bill also establishes a new category for “migrant inadmissibility” into the country, dealing particularly with illegal immigrants accused of assaulting law enforcement.

In response to 148 Democratic Representatives voting against the bill, House Majority Whip Republican Rep. Tom Emmer (Minnesota) suggested that Democrats were “protect[ing] violent illegal immigrants” rather than the country’s “brave law enforcement officers.”

Emmer added that the move showed how the Democratic Party had become “the most anti-law enforcement party” in America’s history.

The bill also comes amid several incidents that have made headlines showing illegal immigrants attacking police officers across the country.
