(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Biden began his high-profile press conference by mixing up Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
While answering a question about his choice in veep on Thursday, President Joe Biden confidently stated that he “wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump” to be the VP if he didn’t think “she was qualified to be President.”
Trump almost instantly responded to the mistake with his own cutting remarks.
Posting a clip of the President’s remarks, Trump described the event as Biden’s “‘Big Boy’ Press Conference,” highlighting the mistake and sarcastically concluding, “Great job, Joe!”
That was Biden’s second glaring mistake on Thursday. Earlier in the day, he referred to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “President Putin.”
Biden made the mistake while introducing Zelenskyy, which drew audible gasps from those in the room.
He quickly corrected himself, stating he was “so focused on beating Putin” that he made the fumble of introducing the President of Ukraine, who he described as having “courage” and “determination,” as President Putin.
His performance on Thursday did little to allay fears he might not be up for a second term, two weeks after his dismal debate performance against Trump on June 27.
So far, 13 House Democrats and one Democrat Senator have publicly appealed for Biden to withdraw from the race. Now, Biden faces scrutiny from the United Auto Workers, who met on Thursday to discuss growing concerns about Biden’s candidacy despite endorsing him in January.
Biden’s advisers have also had to meet with Senate Democrats to prevent further defections. The President also sent House Democrats a letter on Monday reiterating he would remain in the race and called for lawmakers to stop the intraparty murmurs about his withdrawal.
That didn’t stop four more House Democrats from calling on Biden to end his campaign.
Democrat Reps. Greg Stanton (Arizona), Hillary Scholten (Michigan), Brad Schneider (Illinois), and Ed Case (Hawaii) have all called on Biden to step down in the past week.
