(PartiallyPolitics.com) – In Florida, a television meteorologist attacked Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) after he signed a bill that would no longer require the state to create an energy policy that takes into consideration climate change. This could potentially roll back all the references to state climate-related law.
On Saturday NBC 6 News meteorologist Steve MacLaughlin took to the social media platform X to state that Florida was currently unaffordable and on fire and yet the state government was deciding to roll back on legislation that considered climate change. The post also included a video of MacLaughlin that lasted for around one minute in which he specifically discusses the new rule that is set to go into effect in July.
As he pointed out, his network had reported on Thursday on the change in stance of the Florida government which had decided to roll back climate change legislation and language which was particularly important for the state. As he pointed out in the last few years Florida has had record flooding, heat, and rain which has resulted in the insurance rates across the state skyrocketing. He added that the effects of climate change could also be seen as corals across the state were dying.
In 2023 Florida had its warmest year on record since 1895, reaching an annual average of 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The changes have also resulted in many insurers choosing to leave the state because of the incredibly high costs.
MacLaughlin argued that the world was waiting to see Florida be a leader in climate change, and yet the government was now arguing that climate change was no longer considered a state priority.
