(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein’s campaign announced on Monday that Stein had completed nearly all the criteria to be placed on the 2024 Presidential ballot in Pennsylvania, which could spell trouble for President Joe Biden.
According to the Washington Examiner, Stein’s campaign confirmed that the Green Party candidate was hundreds of votes away from achieving the 5,000 signatures needed by August 1 to get on Pennsylvania’s Presidential ballot.
While discussing ballot access, Alex Casper, the Secretary for the Green Party in Pennsylvania, highlighted how, historically, Republicans and Democrats were notoriously “harsh in Pennsylvania” on third-party candidates. Therefore, the Green Party would be shooting for 10,000 signatures by July 27 rather than the state’s requirement of 5,000 signatures.
Casper explained to the Washington Examiner that the Party is “confident” that keeping its “volunteer efforts strong,” it would make it onto the state’s ballot. Casper emphasized how necessary it is to have “all boots on the ground to take down the duopoly” on Pennsylvania’s ballot.
The Presidential race in Pennsylvania is anticipated to be one of the closest races in the upcoming election.
In 2016, when the Green Party was on the ballot, Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party’s nominee, insisted that Stein’s third-party candidacy had siphoned votes away from her, allowing former President Donald Trump to win.
That year, Stein received 49,941 votes, close to the 44,292 votes that cost Clinton the win in Pennsylvania in 2016.
When the Green Party wasn’t on the ballot in 2020, President Joe Biden managed to clinch Pennsylvania with a mere 1.2 percent lead over Trump.
However, to limit the damage to Biden’s reelection campaign, the DNC has enlisted the help of top strategists Mary Beth Cahill, Ramsey Reid, and Lis Smith, a team tasked with stomping out Independent and third-party candidates.
But Stein’s campaign manager, Jason Call, highlighted to Newsmax that the Green Party wasn’t trying to “steal votes,” as it is impossible in a democracy unless parties are kept off the ballot.
Call added that, “Votes are not owed, they are earned,” and the Green Party didn’t “owe Joe Biden anything.”
