(PartiallyPolitics.com) – The Wall Street Journal editorial board criticized Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), for claiming that the Biden administration needed to ignore a Texas federal judge’s ruling that would block the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the abortion pill, mifepristone.
Last week, U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk, who was appointed by Trump, ordered the FDA to stop giving their approval for mifepristone, arguing that the drug’s safety is currently being litigated. He also allowed the government to appeal the decision within seven days as well as “seek emergency relief from the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.”
However, following the ruling Ocasio-Cortez claimed that the Biden administration should just “ignore this ruling.” During an interview with CNN, she argued that the courts do not have the necessary authority and power to enforce this decision and that it would be up to the federal administration to enforce it. She proceeded to advocate for President Biden to ignore the ruling in this case.
The Wall Street Journal editors criticized Ocasio-Cortez for these statements in an editorial titled, “Democrats for Defying Court Orders.” In their editorial, they claim that “partisans on the left and right are willing to trash political norms and institutions to get their way.” They proceed to use Ocasio-Cortez’s push for the federal government to ignore the ruling as evidence of this, arguing that it “is dangerous for the rule of law.” They added that if Biden proceeded with that advice the conservatives would also do the same when they are in power.
