(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is participating in what she has dubbed a “hot labor summer” after she appeared on the picket line of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the SAG-AFTRA outside of Netflix’s offices in Manhattan.
Ocasio-Cortez had argued that they had workers across the country who were either currently on strike or were organizing a strike. She added that this was because everyone was facing the same problems of corporate greed and concentrated wealth held by a few in the country. She proceeded to tell The Hollywood Reporter that the important thing is for everyone to stand together during these times.
Ocasio-Cortez also referenced a second possible strike, following the falling apart of the talks between the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and UPS, the shipping company. She added that the fight was here and that it was time to crack all of this open. As she told the crowd the most important that is direct action.
She added that they needed to show them not just that they are stronger, but that “our solidarity” exceeds the strength of their greed.
The WGA started striking in May while the SAG-AFTRA first started their strikes in mid-July. Both of the unions are hoping to achieve wage increases and more beneficial working conditions for all those who are members of the union.
Ocasio-Cortez stood outside the Netflix offices and pushed back against “greedy” executives and CEOs while also joining the fight against AI technology that could potentially lead to many members of the union losing their livelihoods.
