(PartiallyPolitics.com) – House leadership has announced the launch of a bipartisan task force to probe the attempt on Trump’s life.
On Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) revealed the launch of a bipartisan task force to probe the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
In a joint statement, Johnson and Jeffries described the “security failures” enabling the attempt on Trump’s life as “shocking,” adding the “House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats” was their response to a bipartisan demand for answers.
The pair added the task force would have “subpoena authority” and would move quickly to determine the “facts, ensure accountability,” and stop similar failures from reoccurring.
Republican Rep. Mike Kelly (Pennsylvania), who was in attendance at the Butlers, Pennsylvania, shooting, was the lead sponsor of the resolution that has led to establishing the task force.
The task force’s objective is to assess the security failures that ultimately allowed the would-be assassin to make an attempt on the former President’s life and make recommendations about changes the Secret Service agency can make and legislation lawmakers could implement.
Following the assassination attempt, Johnson had vowed to set up a task force to investigate.
Establishing the task force also comes after now-former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, where she faced grueling questions from lawmakers for nearly 5 hours. Cheatle didn’t provide much detail about the events surrounding the shooting, repeatedly citing the Secret Service’s internal investigation as the reason she couldn’t discuss specifics.
