(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Following the recent Republican primary debate in Tuscaloosa, Ala., former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has gained new reason to stay in the Republican presidential race despite the fact that his nomination chances continued to be slim.
On Wednesday, during the debate hosted by NewsNation Christie slammed former President Donald Trump, while also managing to get the most speaking time out of all the candidates on the stage. He further managed to make a number of attacks on all three of his Republican opponents who were on the stage.
Many in the GOP have argued that Christie’s choice to remain in the presidential race is causing further division in the Republican field which is likely to allow Trump to win the 2024 Republican nomination. However, Justin Sayfie, a Republican strategist argued that the better Christie’s performance the higher the chances of Trump becoming the nominee, adding further that there was no chance that Christie would be able to win the race.
Sayfie further pointed out that when Christie’s performance in the race improves he becomes a lot more likely to continue being in the race.
During his first two terms in the White House, Trump and Christie had remained close allies, with the latter helping Trump in the preparation for the 2020 presidential debate against Joe Biden. However, following the 2020 election, and the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, there was a rift in the relationship between the two men. Christie has now taken this opportunity to be one of Trump’s biggest opponents in the presidential race.
