(PartiallyPolitics.com) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is meant to act without partisanship or political affiliations in targeting domestic terrorism. However, the majority of their investigations recently are focused on MAGA supporters according to recent data obtained by Newsweek.
Former President Donald Trump’s supporters are viewed by the federal government as one of the important threats that needs to be addressed ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
A current FBI official, who spoke about this anonymously, stated that the FBI was in an “impossible position” as they are tasked with blocking a possible repetition of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack while combating domestic terrorism. At the same time, the Bureau needs to protect Americans’ Constitutional right to freedom of speech and to campaign and protest against the federal government. The Bureau with its focus on Trump’s MAGA supporters was potentially risking provoking anti-government agencies and bringing about the domestic terrorism that they were looking to counteract.
The official also pointed out that this is also a time when many Congressional Republicans have attacked the Federal government for having allegedly weaponized the FBI against the right wing.
During their three-month investigation, Newsweek interviewed a dozen current and former government officials in order to understand domestic terrorism and security and to evaluate the actions taken by the administration. The majority of officials requested to speak anonymously as they were worried about the possible repercussions of their statements or about the possibility of making references regarding partisan politics.
A top terrorism expert and senior adviser to the RAND Corporation president, Brian Michael Jenkins, stated that the FBI is not responsible for the political environment that has been created right now.
