(PartiallyPolitics.com) – On Monday, Jonathan Turley, a legal expert, argued that it would be “absurd” for former President Donald Trump to be jailed over the felony charges against him and that most likely he would just receive a lighter punishment.
Earlier this month a New York jury found Trump to be guilty on all 34 counts in the falsifying business documents case in order to cover up a hush money payment made before the 2016 presidential election in an attempt to hide an affair.
His sentencing is set to take place on July 11, only four days before he is officially named the Republican presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention. Trump has appealed the conviction, however, the schedule for the sentencing has not yet changed. Former President Trump could face a maximum of four years in prison sentence, however, Turley argued that it is unlikely that they will sentence him to spend time in jail.
During a Fox News interview with Neil Cavuto, Turley pointed out that the majority of people already have an idea of Trump, and that he has never met someone in the middle as most people either love or hate him. At the same time, he pointed out that it would be “absurd” for him to be sentenced to imprisonment as someone who is an elderly first offender and his crime was not a violent one. He also noted that there has been a lot of controversy regarding his prosecution and that the entire case could ultimately be overturned through Trump’s appeal.
