(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Businessman Sandy Pensler from Detroit has withdrawn from the GOP Senate race in Michigan and has endorsed former Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., ahead of the state’s primary.
On Saturday, Pensler had announced his withdrawal during former President Donald Trump’s rally where he had been called on stage by Trump himself. Earlier this year Trump had endorsed Rogers, who had previously served in the House for 14 years and had been the chair of the House Intelligence Committee.
Pensler argued during his comments that they needed to win control of the Senate and that the division in the primary was only hurting the party’s ability and chances. He pointed out that Trump had endorsed Rogers and that tonight he would be doing the same thing.
Rogers is now only left facing one high-profile opponent, Justin Amash, a former U.S. representative who had in 2019 left the Republican Party after calling for the impeachment of then-President Trump. Amash has served from 2011 to 2021 as a representative of Grand Rapids.
Trump noted that they were unifying the GOP, following the announcement from Pensler. Rogers also took to the stage to inform rally goers that there had never been a United States that had been more unsafe than it had been during the last four years of the Democrats being in power.
Rogers added that as someone who is a former law enforcement officer, he applauded Trump for his handling during the assassination attempt last Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania. He pointed out that it was not about the bullet that had brought him down but rather about the fact that he had gotten back up for America.
