(PartiallyPolitics.com) – On Sunday, Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas), stated that the country was undoubtedly heading towards a government shutdown.

In an interview on CBS News’s “Face The Nations” Gonzales said that he did not want to see the government shutting down but that based on the current situation it appears like a shutdown is where the country is headed. He further argued that everyone needed to prepare for the possibility.

Gonzales maintained that he was against the continuing resolution (CR) which is considered a short-term measure that would help lawmakers get another few weeks before they need to pass one of the appropriation bills. In the past Congress has frequently used CRs in order to avoid having the government shut down at the end of September.

However, while some conservative Republicans have been more open to the possibility of the government shutting down, Gonzalez has maintained that he did not want the government to shut down at the end of the month. He also added that he does not think that the CR is the solution to the Congress’ funding problem. He further noted that oftentimes Congress will pass the necessary legislation right at the last minute.

He proceeded to argue that from his experience, when Congress was given time to do something they would just take the time, but that time did not necessarily mean that solutions would be found. Instead, he argued that a hard line is what is necessary in order to force everyone in the house to focus and pass the appropriations bills.
