(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) advised the Republicans to consider defunding the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) if the Biden administration chooses to not enforce a ruling by a federal judge in Texas last week which blocked the federal approval for one of the two available abortion pills.

The judge in Texas blocked the federal approval of mifepristone, an abortion drug that has been on the market for more than 20 years. However, Democrats, including Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), have been pushing for the White House to not adhere to the ruling, arguing that there is a precedent that would enable President Biden to ignore the decision.

On Sunday during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union, Gonzales argued that it is dangerous having an administration claiming that they might not uphold and enforce a ruling. He added that House Republicans currently have control of “the purse”  and if the administration chooses to not uphold the ruling then it might be necessary for the House Republican to defund certain FDA programs.

The federal judge in their ruling claimed that the federal government had rushed in making a decision and approving the drug which resulted in an unsafe drug being allowed on the market. The FDA appealed this decision within the day to the conservative 5th Circuit Court of Appeal.

The White House has not yet announced whether they are planning on ignoring the ruling instead Biden has promised to fight the case in court.
