His father, former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean, told NJ.com the illness was “serious but temporary” and predicted his son would be back in “two to three weeks.” That timeline has since passed without a return.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he spoke with Kean by phone and found him “good and optimistic.” Johnson added that Kean “will be fully transparent and disclose all that” once he returns. But Johnson also admitted he does not know the details of the condition. That means the highest-ranking Republican in the House vouched for Kean’s recovery without knowing what he is recovering from.

Limited Activity Raises More Questions

Kean has not been entirely silent. His staff kept working, and he stayed active on social media. He also electronically signed a congressional financial disclosure document in late April, showing he made several personal stock trades during his absence. He told the New Jersey Globe by phone that he plans to run for re-election and expects to return “within weeks.” Those limited actions show he retained some capacity — but they also raise a fair question: if he could sign documents and trade stocks, why couldn’t he vote?

New Jersey’s 7th District is rated a toss-up by the Cook Political Report, and Democrats have already listed it as a top target.
