(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Democrats are attempting to rebuild their strength in the “blue wall” states, which were previously won by former President Donald Trump in 2016, in an attempt to increase the party’s presence in the region as they head towards elections next year.
Over the past six months, the Democratic party has managed to win key victories in states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, marking an increase in their successes in the state which were called into question after Trump won these states during the 2016 presidential election. Still, the Democrats are no longer taking these states for granted, which could mean additional work for Biden as he tries to win a second term in office.
More importantly, several senators in those states are also currently facing reelection, which could be important for the Democrats who are trying to maintain their Senate majority.
Kaitlin Fahey, a Democratic consultant, who successfully bid to host next year’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and former chief of staff to Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), both indicated that in order to win the White House and retain the Senate majority then the path “cuts through the Midwest.”
At the same time though the Republicans are trying to destroy the “blue wall” and have selected Milwaukee as the location of the Republican National Convention next year. Fahey has pointed out that both sides have shown that they consider the Midwest particularly important and that the constituencies of those states which were previously forgotten at times, are not going to be forgotten in the upcoming election.
Earlier this month, the Democrats showed that they would work to protect the “blue wall” following Biden and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) announcement that Chicago was selected to host the 2024 party convention. Governors of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota had all signed in support of Chicago’s bid.
