(PartiallyPolitics.com) – On Sunday, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel stated that the Republicans would need to address the abortion issue “head-on” on the campaign trail, and added that this issue was central to the party’s underwhelming performance in the 2022 midterm.

In an interview on Fox, McDaniel said that abortion is a major issue in key states like Pennsylvania  and Michigan. She further added that the guidance they were giving to candidates in 2024 races is that they needed to address abortion “head on,” which is something that many candidates have so far refused to do.

Abortion access became a key issue in the 2022 midterm election, following the overturning of Roe v. Wade last summer. With the overturning of the landmark case, federal protection for abortions which had existed for close to five decades was stripped. Following the removal of the protection, many Republican-led states moved to place bans and restrictions on abortions.

McDaniel said that many in the GOP believed that in the 2022 midterm elections, they could just speak about the economy while ignoring this central issue. As a result, Republicans only managed to win the House in a slight majority but failed to win a Senate majority. They also lost many key gubernatorial races.

The RNC chairwoman is now advising Republicans to attack the Democratic position on abortions head-on. She added that Republicans should put Democrats on the defensive and have them actually “articulate” their position. She added that this was going to be a critical message that they needed to “get out before 2024.”
