(PartiallyPolitics.com) – DeSantis promised Florida would not be complying with the Surgeon General’s public health advisory on guns.

On Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) took to X to reveal that Florida would not be complying with the Surgeon General’s “public health” advisory targeting gun violence.

DeSantis compared the Surgeon General’s current “‘public health’ bureaucracy” to what the country faced “During the pandemic” when “unelected bureaucrats” used the pretext of “public health” to deprive Americans of their rights, highlighting that at that time, he signed legislation protecting Floridians from federal government’s “overreach.”

He highlighted that the Surgeon General’s current public health advisory is an attempt to “violate the Second Amendment,” declaring that he wouldn’t “comply,” before adding that Florida would “always reject” the “unconstitutional power-grabs” of Biden’s administration.

DeSantis’s remarks are a response to Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s declaration that gun violence in the U.S. is a public health crisis, releasing a 39-page report to confirm his thesis.

In the report, Murthy suggests several policy changes, including universal background checks, banning large-capacity magazines and assault weapons for purchase by civilians, expanding purchaser licensing laws, and enforcing conditions in public spaces related to firearm use.

Speaking to CNN’s John Berman, Murthy stated that the problem had “been worsening” over the last two decades, adding that it had worsened to such an extent that “gun violence is the leading cause of death among kids and teens.”

Murthy claimed the health advisory was a way to remove politics from the equation and place gun violence “into the realm of public health,” suggesting that is “where it belongs.”
