(PartiallyPolitics.com) – Republicans are growing more worried about Colorado potentially slipping into the Democrat’s fingers following the recent defeat and the close-call races in many of the conservative areas in the state. This week, the latest blow to the Republican party came after the GOP lost the mayoral race in Colorado Springs. This is the first time in decades that a Republican party member did not manage to win.
Last year, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) had also been extremely close to not winning her re-election campaign, which was one of the biggest surprises of the 2022 presidential election.
Sandra Hagen Solin, the founder of lobbying firm Capitol Solutions, stated that across the state there had been a movement towards the left that was unexpected. She added that historically in Colorado people tend to vote for the person, which leads to a lot of vote-splitting. However, in this latest election cycle, “it was largely an up-and-down-the-ticket vote for a party, for Democrats.”
Yemi Mobolade, an independent candidate, won the election in Colorado Springs. The newcomer who was voted in on Tuesday is going to be taking over following Republican Wayne Williams, a former Colorado secretary of state exit. This is going to be the first time in 45 years that the city is not going to have a Republican mayor.
Mobolabe was shown to be the leader in the race in April during the initial results of the 12-candidate mayoral race. However, the margins during Tuesday’s runoff election showed he won by 15 points in the city that was previously considered to be a Republican stronghold.
