(PartiallyPolitics.com) – On Monday, the White House announced that President Biden would veto a bill that would ban biological males from competing in women’s sports even if it successfully passes through both Congress chambers.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, or H.R. 734, was introduced by Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., and is expected to reach the House floor for a vote within the week. In a statement, the White House announced that the administration was against the bill, as it would block students across the nation from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity. They have added that if this bill was successful, it would block many families and students from accessing sports which are an “important part of growing up.”
In the released statement they add that “Schools, coaches, and athletic associations” are already thinking of ways that would allow the sports to become fairer so that people would be allowed to compete according to grade levels and competition levels and that there is no reason for a national ban that would be discriminatory. They further note that a “one-size-fits-all requirement that forces coaches to remove kids from their teams,” and argued that transgender youth are already dealing with a mental health crisis, adding that this law is “unnecessary.”
Steube’s bill would require all educational institutions that benefit from federal funding from Title IX to not allow people “whose sex is male to participate in an athletic program or activity that is designed for women or girls.”
