China’s embassy in Germany condemned Berlin’s suspension of its extradition treaty with Hong Kong, a move Germany said was a response to the postponement of an election in the Chinese city.

In a statement on its website, dated Friday, China’s embassy said the suspension violated international law and the basic norms of international relations, and “grossly interferes with China’s internal affairs.”

The embassy expressed “strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition” to the minister’s remarks, and said that China “reserves the right to respond further,” without elaborating.

Germany Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Friday that Berlin will suspend its extradition agreement with Hong Kong, after Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam postponed a Sept. 6 election to the city’s legislature by a year.

“The Hong Kong government’s decision to disqualify a dozen opposition candidates for the election and postpone the elections to the legislature is another infringement on the rights of the citizens of Hong Kong,” Maas said.

“We have repeatedly made our expectation clear that China lives up to its legal responsibilities under international law,” he said, adding that this included ensuring rights under the Basic Law as well as the right to free and fair elections.

  1. Let’s see, China and fair elections…nope! Don’t seem to fit. Sorry, I can’t seem to put the two together. China and oppression, now those two go together. You guys just now figuring this out?

  2. The treaty was with Hong Kong, NOT WITH CHINA, as China has usurped the autonomy of HK the treaty is VOID altogether.
Sorry China you are full of S*&T and a regime that should not even exist. You practice genocide, you are the ONLY COUNTRY LEFT in an expansionist mode and you believe that no would can or will stop you. You will be stopped by your own people eventually. At some point the military there in China will decide not to fire upon their own fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and cousins. The insanely powerful and rich in China will go the way of all the ruling class just as when the leadership the allowed the leaders of today did to the old regime there. You will all be put to death for your criminal acts, your children will be imprisoned just as you did before, the wealthy and their offspring will be killed or worse. In other words the unequal and dastardly difference between the haves and have nots WILL eventually be your own ruin. Your genocide of others will be your own end.
