After years of losing subscribers, Disney, who owns ESPN, is once again looking to lay off hundreds of employees at the cable sports network.

By some reports, Disney could get rid of 700 ESPN employees. The entertainment giant is working to bring the sports network’s costs down to be more in line with its dwindling reach.

According to FrontOfficeSports, the layoffs will mostly affect employees behind the cameras most, but they may also target on-air and radio talent.

While most of the big-name talent appears to be safe from these layoffs, insiders say that some will be required to take a pay cut. Pay cuts may also hit some of ESPN’s executives and managers. Also, those with contracts that are up soon will not be renewed, the reports say.

Disney is hoping to cut “tens of millions” out of the ESPN operating budget, and the layoffs are only the first step, insiders say.

If the expected budget cuts do occur, it will mark the third time in just five years that ESPN instituted sweeping layoffs and a steep budget-cutting campaign. In 2015, ESPN cut 350 employees. In 2017 the company shed another 100 employees. Also in 2017, the company cut its budget by $80 million.

ESPN is not alone in losing customers. In general, cable television is experiencing steep declines in customers as Americans cancel their cable and opt for streaming services.

In July, for instance, Verizon reported a loss of 81,000 pay-TV subscribers for its FiOS service, which is on top of a 25 percent decline in revenue for its media unit. Only months before that, AT&T noted that it had lost 1.4 million in the third quarter of 2019.

  1. Maybe if they hadn’t got so political they wouldn’t lost viewers. I know my husband and I stop watching them because of that

  2. Great!!! Disney and ESPN have allowed the network to be far too political. No one turns into a sporting event to be “lectured” by athletes in social causes. Very few want to be inundated with messages for divisive left-wing fri he groups on athletic courts, fields, jerseys, etc. Just okay the damn game!! Say and do whatever you want IN YOUR TIME!! People are tired of athletes and owners feeling they have the “pulse” of society, and then having to listen to their ridiculous and trash-talked arguments. Entirely the wrong venue for them if they want to stay on the air.

  3. ESPN, THE NFL, THE NBA, MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL AND ALL THE OTHER SPORTS NETWORKS SHOULD LEARN A LESSON. POLITICAL STATEMENTS RUN VIEWERS AND LISTENERS OFF. THE PUBLIC IS SICK AND TIRED OF ATHLETES TELLING US HOW THEY THINK. JUST PLAY THE GAME AND STAY OUT OF POLITICS. IF I OWNED A TEAM, ANY PLAYER DOING WHAT THEY HAVE DONE WOULD BE FIRED ON THE SPOT.

  4. disney got greedy why hsould people pay for the samething they watched since spn started for free enough is enoigh

  5. Disney, and many of their prominent sports personalities, deserves this decline for their over emphasis on political correctness and phony, “woke” behavior. Good riddance to ESPN and their shills in the NBA and NFL!

  6. While I feel sorry for the ones behind the scenes that suffered, it’s the high paid on air idiots with all their Social bullshit that have turned off fans and hence ratings. ESPN have been doing their political crap for years and it’s finally catching up with them. When the NBA, NFL and the rest of the overpaid athletes and announcers quit lecturing to fans and realize your employer are the fans not BLM you might have fans return, but I doubt it!

  7. Most Americans don’t like to be lectured. We turn to sports & recreation to escape depressing Covid. Your crap divides people not bring them together. Wrong approach.

  8. Wow!! All those layoffs even after ESPN discovered they were such ardent supporters of BLM and ANTIFA. Maybe they can all go down to the Unemployment office and kneel in front of the building and get another job. Life is a b##ch when you sign up to be a sports caster and discover you are really a political hack. The truth is sports casters make more money and actually stay employed. Maybe you should all vote for Trump and get a new job. Sorry, not feeling bad for any of you.
