Twenty GOP House members are calling for Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to be impeached. The pressure is now increasing on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., according to a report by the Hill.

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., who is currently fighting against McCarthy becoming the House speaker, noted that the majority of the GOP members in the House of Representatives were hoping to see the party pursue impeachments during the next congress. Biggs himself originally introduced an impeachment article against Mayorkas in 2021.

Biggs in his comments added that “Secretary Mayorkas has committed high crimes and misdemeanors. His conduct is not incompetent. It is not negligent. It is willful and intentional.” He then proceeded to name some of the exact areas in which Mayorkas could be considered to have broken the law.
As he described this could include Mayorkas’ failure “to maintain operational control of the border as required under the law,” or Mayorkas’ lies to Congress when he had claimed to be “maintaining operational control of the border.

McCarthy, who has also been extremely critical of Mayorkas, has lately said that he would not be using impeachments against the Biden administration as a general political exercise. However, with Biggs having gathered 32 co-sponsors for his impeachment resolution, Biggs and other Republicans may not be happy to simply let the issue go.
