Ilhan Omar says U.N. should take control of our southern border

Last Tuesday, during an address in front of a crowd in Minneapolis, far-left Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar declared that the United Nations should be deployed at the US-Mexico border to help manage the immigration crisis, insisting that the Trump administration has and continues to commit human rights abuses.

“There is no good way to detain immigrants. We are treating people like criminals when they have not committed a crime,” Omar told the crowd.

Omar then continued, saying, “Listen, folks. We’re really losing our moral high ground,” she continued. “It doesn’t make any sense for us to be committing these kinds of human rights violations, to have these policies in the way we interact with migrants and asylum seekers if we want to continue to be the kind of country that condemns countries in Africa, in Asia or Latin American countries for its treatment of refugees and asylum seekers.”

The freshmen congresswomen then proposed that the most effective way to deal with the ‘crisis’ – a word Democrats have refused to use up until recently – is to involve the United Nations.

“So we should do what any other country does, by dealing with this situation in a serious way. So we have to bring in the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees, an agency that has the expertise and the training to handle massive flows of refugees humanely,” Omar, herself a Somali refugee said.

The Somali congresswomen’s remarks come as the country attempts to cope with an unprecedented number of unskilled, non-English speaking, illegal immigrants at our southern border.

As per statistics provided by Customs and Border Protection, the US Border Patrol has made a total of 760,370 border apprehensions so far in 2019. Border agents also report having turned away another 102,415 migrants at the border.

Although the crisis has eased just slightly due to the intense heat seen this summer, immigration officials haven’t been able to process all of the migrant fast enough. Tragically, this has resulted in hundreds of thousands of family units of illegal immigrants being let go into the interior of the country, most of which will never leave.

The Trump administration has done a bit to implement policies to attenuate the problem, but they’ve proven to be inadequate.

Trump’s right-wing position on immigration has caused many Democrats to defiantly shift even further to the left than they already were. A growing number of Democrats, including Ilhan Omar, have openly called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency responsible for deporting illegal immigrants.
