Many are wondering what Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is planning for next year after the Democrats managed to perform quite strongly in the midterm elections. Pelosi has the option to do whatever she wants in the following years, having served as the Democratic leader for two decades. Previously she had said that at the end of this term she was planning on withdrawing from the party’s leadership. This would be a move that would allow younger Democrats the space to potentially rise within the Democratic party.
There are some Democrats that are intent on ensuring that Pelosi will hold her end of this promise and indeed withdraw. However, the strong results yielded by House Democrats in Tuesday’s elections have managed to give Pelosi the upper hand, as her position was strengthened. According to many sources, many Democrats have claimed that this strong performance also means that Pelosi can remain at the top if she wants to.
Ashley Etienne, Pelosi’s former communication director noted that now that the “red wave” did not happen, Pelosi has the power to make any choice she wants regarding the future.
Still, even though a red wave did not come to pass, the Republicans are most likely to win control of the lower chamber. However, the Democrats managed to retain more than a dozen of their key seats in battleground territories. This meant that for the first time they did not have to suffer from losing an excess number of seats in the way that previous Democratic Presidents have had to deal with a wave and loss of Congress.
